Norfork Lake bass fishing is about to become one of the more revealing tests on the 2026 Bassmaster calendar. When the first Elite Qualifier begins September 23, anglers will face a clear Ozarks reservoir full of moving fall bass without the forward-facing sonar many professionals now use to track suspended fish in real time.
Removing that tool does not send tournament fishing back twenty years. Side imaging, down imaging and mapping still matter, but the Norfork challenge shifts toward interpreting structure, predicting September bass movement, and making decisions before a fish appears conveniently on a forward-looking screen.
Norfork Lake Bass Fishing Will Reward Prediction Again
The Nitro Boats Bassmaster Elite Qualifier at Norfork Lake runs September 23-25 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. It opens a three-event postseason series that will eventually send 10 anglers into the Progressive Bassmaster Elite Series.
The 2026 qualifier schedule was designed around three very different fisheries: Norfork first, Toledo Bend in October and Lake Guntersville in November.
That variety already demands versatility. The sonar rules add another layer.
Norfork and Guntersville will be contested without forward-facing sonar, while Toledo Bend will allow it. An angler capable of building an entire fall program around suspended fish and live sonar at Toledo Bend may need a very different process in Arkansas.
At Norfork, prediction replaces confirmation.
Anglers still have electronics. What disappears is the ability to continuously watch an individual bass ahead of the boat and react to its movement.
Fall Bait Movement Makes The Timing Uncomfortable
Late September is a tricky time to remove that level of certainty.
Shorter days and cooler nights begin pushing baitfish and bass away from established summer positions, but the migration does not happen simultaneously across a reservoir.
The current Norfork fall outlook describes bass following forage from main and secondary points toward creek arms. Veteran Arkansas pro Stephen Browning expects fish to occupy an extremely broad range, from inches of water to depths beyond 20 feet.
That creates the central tournament problem.
An angler can identify a perfect long point with mapping and side imaging, fish it thoroughly and still miss because the bait moved farther into a creek that morning. Another competitor can commit shallow too soon and bypass fish still staging offshore.
Without live sonar continually showing suspended targets, bait becomes the clue.
Bird activity, surface schooling, traditional sonar, wind direction, creek position and the presence of forage around structure all become more important pieces of the same puzzle.
Side Imaging Still Matters, But It Answers A Different Question
Calling Norfork a tournament “without electronics” would be misleading.
Browning specifically expects side scan and down scan to matter, particularly when anglers search for offshore structure and long tapering main-lake points. Mapping will also help identify channels, breaks and likely migration routes.
The difference is what those tools tell the angler.
Forward-facing sonar can answer: Where is that fish right now?
Side imaging and mapping are more likely to answer: Where should fish be?
That sounds like a subtle distinction. During a three-day qualifier with an Elite Series career at stake, it becomes enormous.

The no-FFS format does not necessarily make fishing harder in every situation. It makes wrong assumptions more expensive.
Three Bass Species Could Complicate The Equation
Norfork contains largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, which gives competitors more than one path toward a limit.
That can become valuable during a transition tournament.
Smallmouth may relate to rocky offshore structure. Spotted bass can provide dependable bites around deeper structure and bait. Largemouth may become increasingly attractive as forage moves toward creek arms and shallower cover.
But species flexibility also creates another decision.
Does an angler stay with a reliable group of smaller fish or abandon them to search for the quality needed to separate from the field?
Without forward-facing sonar, locating individual high-quality offshore fish becomes less straightforward. That could make mixed-bag strategies more important, particularly if no single pattern remains stable for all three competition days.
The anglers who understand when to change species may gain as much as those who simply locate the best opening-day school.
The Sonar Split Makes The Entire EQ Series More Revealing
Norfork is only the beginning.
The next qualifier moves to Toledo Bend October 21-23, where forward-facing sonar will be permitted. The finale at Guntersville November 11-13 returns to a no-FFS format.
That produces an unusual skills comparison.
An angler might succeed at Norfork by reading points, bait migration and traditional electronics. At Toledo Bend, the ability to target suspended fish around timber with forward-facing sonar could become much more valuable. Guntersville can then shift the emphasis again toward vegetation, grass edges and traditional structure fishing.
The broader 2026 live-sonar policy reflects B.A.S.S.’ attempt to split events between FFS and non-FFS competition rather than eliminating the technology completely.
For the qualifiers, that creates a versatility exam instead of a referendum on whether sonar is good or bad.
The First Two Days Will Expose The Real Skill Gap
The strongest signal at Norfork may not be which lure wins. It will be how quickly anglers recover when their first plan stops working.
Fall bass move. Bait moves. Wind changes productive banks. Cooler nights can accelerate the transition. A main-lake point that looks right during practice may become empty by tournament morning.
Without forward-facing sonar, competitors cannot solve every problem by simply searching farther ahead of the boat.
They will have to recognize dead water sooner, understand why a pattern stopped producing and predict where those fish are most likely to go next.
That is where tournament experience should show.
The Norfork event also carries consequences far beyond one September trophy. The Top 100 Opens anglers reached the EQ series, but only 10 Elite Series invitations are available through the three-event path. A poor opening tournament immediately turns Toledo Bend and Guntersville into recovery events.
Norfork Lake bass fishing therefore offers a better technology test than another argument about whether forward-facing sonar belongs in tournaments. The anglers will still use sophisticated electronics. They simply will not have one tool that tells them exactly where many of the fish are looking and moving.
The qualifier should reward competitors who can connect forage, structure, season and species before the screen confirms the answer. In late September on a changing Ozarks reservoir, that may be the clearest measure yet of who can use technology and who can still think one cast ahead of it.
